LifePort: Delivering the Evidence
We envision a world where every transplantable organ is placed into a perfusion transporter immediately upon recovery from the donor. A growing body of evidence speaks to the benefits of perfusion in kidneys. Others have begun important work in extrarenal organs. But only now are clinical investigators embarking upon landmark science in this field. Our sponsorship of O:PAIRS (Outcomes from Preservation Alternatives in International Renal-transplant Studies) aims to erase any doubt that kidney perfusion is efficacious, cost-efficient, and practical. Preclinical results and clinical trials in the heart, liver, lung, and intestine are soon to follow. Stay tuned to this site for news and information.
Belgium, The Netherlands, Germany The Machine Preservation Trial stands foremost in the O:PAIRS group: the first large, international, multicenter clinical trial to investigate the relative efficacy and cost-effectiveness of machine versus static preservation. The trial was conducted in Germany, The Netherlands, and Belgium in collaboration with Eurotransplant and the Deutsche Stiftung Organtransplantation. Start 1 November 2005. End 1 November 2006. Coordinating PI: Rutger Ploeg. N=600 recipients. Results from the landmark Machine Preservation Trial published in the New England Journal of Medicine in 2009 demonstrated for the first time that use of a LifePort can reduce the odds of experiencing a delay in recovery of kidney function by 43 percent. In addition, these kidneys are 48 percent less likely to fail within a year compared to those stored in the traditional box of ice.(i) These results build upon those from retrospective studies showing that machine preservation improves the quality of a kidney from a cadaveric donor prior to transplantation in comparison to those stored in a cool box.(ii) (i)Moers C, Smits JM, Maathuis M-HJ et al.
