Hypothermic Machine Perfusion Allows Safe Delay in Kidney Transplantation After Cold Storage

An exciting recent study published in Journal of Clinical Medicine by Macech et al. shows that using HMP with LifePort Kidney Transporter after a period of SCS can safely prolong kidney preservation time without compromising transplant outcomes.

Some important findings:

  • Kidneys preserved with SCS + HMP had significantly lower rates of DGF compared to SCS alone – 28.3% vs 44.8%!
  • Despite longer total CIT, graft and patient survival at 2 years remained comparable between the two groups
  • No harmful threshold for HMP duration was identified

The key takeaway:
When using LifePort Kidney Transporter, HMP following a period of SCS safely extends preservation time for transplant teams and is associated with a lower incidence of DGF, allowing more time for optimization, logistics, and recipient allocation
