Professor Benoit Barrou – Why should kidneys be machine perfused?

22 July 2014  //

Professor Benoit Barrou, Head of the Kidney Transplantation Program, Department of Urology and Transplant Surgery, Groupe Hospitalier Pitié Salpêtrière, Paris, France

Professor Barrou presents his clinical practice of machine perfusion and the national French protocol for machine perfusing all ECD kidneys. He reviews the data that led to his current practice of perfusing all ECD kidneys, as well as identifying the practicalities of setting up a national protocol for machine perfusion.

Based on our experience with ECD kidneys, literature, and the experimental data that we get in the lab, we now highly recommend to perfuse DBD-ECD kidneys as soon as possible after explianatation. Not doing it may impair the outcome.
